The Monroe County Chamber of Commerce has joined the ranks of popular news channels, sports teams, and other major international organizations which use social networking to market to millions of Internet user all over the world.

Up until now, the Chamber has been using “Facebook” and “Twitter” as a means to update followers regarding Grand Openings, Ribbon Cuttings, Chamber News and Upcoming Events.

Now, the Chamber is also using these social networking environments to promote area businesses. The Chamber is now posting coupons, special offers and promotions free for area Chamber members.

“I recently attended the Governor’s Conference in Nashville and the Tennessee Association of Community Leadership Conference in Pigeon Forge. One workshop that was common to both addressed the importance of social networking. Of the nearly 200 in attendance at each of these workshops, I was one of only a handful who raised their hands when asked if they currently use social networking to help their organization”, said Chamber President & CEO William Wells.

William continues, “At the workshop in Pigeon Forge, our Chamber of Commerce website was used as an example of an extremely effective and powerful way to use Facebook by integrating the live feed into our home page. This means that our website visitors don’t even have to know what Facebook is, but can still benefit from the information we provide”.

William states, “In September alone, the Chamber of Commerce website averaged 270 visitors per day, with a monthly total of 8127 visitors, or for those who like the term “hits”, the Chamber site averages over 115,000 hits per month. But we’ve now added a new audience. We have over 100 followers on Facebook and over 400 followers on Twitter. We have Chambers, businesses, news organizations, and individuals from all over the country, and the world for that matter, who have chosen to follow our activity. This is a tremendous benefit to our area businesses and organizations”.
